Greetings!!! Five years ago, I adopted a vacant lot that was overrun with weeds and garbage. I wanted to see what I could do to make difference. I was able to secure seed funding to start this project. I used the funds to buy tools, plants, soil and other garden supplies. I have worked on this lot on my own mostly for the last five years. But my goal has always been to get the community involved. After all, if the community does not want it, it's a done deal.
I'd like to see if we can expand upon what was started five years ago:
1) COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: We are looking for interested parties who want to be a part of the PrairieLand Vacant Lot Stewardship Committee. This committee of community residents would be the driving force behind PrairieLand and would cooperate with community leaders, other community groups, the Ward office, Streets and Sanitation, and the Department of Planning and Development.
2) YOUR DONATIONS HELP: Our local government, meaning our ward office likes the engagement, but we still need to get their permission. They want to know where who is going to fund going the transformation and the maintenance of selected vacant lots? THEY ARE N'OT going to pay for it. So your donations help! Your donations would be used to transform and maintain select problem lots into beautiful and sustainable spaces that enhance instead of detract from the neighborhood.
Hopefully, with support from the community as a neighborhood effort it is possible to get these rogue lots under control and consistently looking good as THE NEW NORM.
